That's why there are blogs and twitterers that you should be following for tutorials and finding out new and easier ways to do things. Self-Promotion – Getting Your Name Out There

February 20th, 2010 | No Comments »

Self-promotion is one of the most critical things a freelance creative (in any field) must do. It is also one of the toughest things to accomplish successfully. I am learning this right now but quickly coming to the conclusion that if I stick to my gut, don't change my mind all the time (like the client you don't want to have), and strategize the way I communicate myself and my business to my target market, it is becoming easier and easier.

The client that nit-picks is the worst. Don't be your own worst client!

The idea of promoting myself, marketing to the masses, and gaining world domination is only a dream. Reality is that it is a necessity to promote your services, communicate the benefits your services have, why you are better than your competitors, and the way you communicate that to your customers is essential. You have to keep you and your business in the eyes and minds of your target market at all times. You have to make a lasting impression through visual communications, your personality, and the truth that is felt in the statements, facts, and descriptions of what you do, why you do it, and how you do it. This, in turn, will create a customer that wasn't even looking for your services tell you the magic words you want to hear. It will make that consumer that is actively seeking your services turn to you for the job instead of your many hard working, well-known competitors.

I have researched creative, strategic ways to promote myself and my business and continuously ran into websites with way too many tips and tricks and non-sense ways to promote yourself that I just find unrealistic. Stick to what you successful freelancers (or even big firms) are doing, use common sense, and add your own personality to what it is you are creating to get your name out into the eyes of your target market.  Read More…

How A Little Program and 5 Minutes Saved My Life

February 12th, 2010 | No Comments »

Sorry if I seem out of it, but literally, this just happened… This is a short story about how a little program, 5 minutes, and another designers blog helped save my life. Enjoy!

All is well after eating dinner with my dad. I finally had time to sit down and write a blog post about something. I was happy because I am usually so busy with a full-time job, social networking, reading other blogs, and my freelance graphic design business that I NEVER have time to sit down and compile a good story or list for a blog (hence the once a month posts. Lame I know).

I decide to change a little setting in the General area of Wordpress's settings, when BLANK happens. Yeah, blank happened. It was like a dark hole made my blog dissapear, my login screen lost in the web-o-sphere and I was left with, well, nothing

I shit my pants, smoked a cigarette, had coffee, and thought about how I would have to start from scratch. Maybe it was a sign to redesign my website? Maybe it was a sign to learn how to back-up my Wordpress blog and everything in it. I tried different URL's ending in wp-admin. I tried going back into Dreamweaver and sending my files back in from when I backed it up withing Dreamweaver. That didn't work. That didn't work AT ALL!

Top 12 Mac Widgets for Designers and Developers

February 12th, 2010 | 3 Comments »

So I just recently bought a brand new 21.5" iMac and learned about one of the new OS X features called widgets. I decided to dive head first and download a few and try them out. I loved them! I thought, "Why not write a blog post about this?"

I saw a few posts that had Top 20 Mac Widgets, Top 30 even, but most of what was listed were either lame or something that you could do with ease and not have to download an extra file to install. I, however, compiled a smaller list that has essentials and not just a bunch of random widgets to fill up space. These are actually useful forgraphic designers and web developers.

Before the list, let me tell you. I don't know why I waited soooo long to get a Mac (this is my first one). I had an old PC that ran all of those background tasks and that operating system they call Windows. I was living in hell. I bought the iMac in early January 2010 and I can safely say that I will die before I go back to a PC. The GUI is amazing, the speed and agility this computer has is beyond my expectations. I have no problems popping up 6 different programs with 18 different websites open in Safari while jamming out to Metallica, and with the below widgets all at one time. It is amazing. Completely appalled. Not much else I can say. It was worth the 2,000 (including a 3 year maintenance plan and 500GB external hard drive).

So, for you Mac lovers who are designers like me, Cheers! Here's the list of Widgets that will help increase productivity in your daily designing, web developing world.
